Kinser Tames Traffic: Wins at Charter Raceway Park

Beaver Dam, WI-- August 2, 2008--Steve Kinser has been involved in countless races over the years in which the outcome has been determined by lapped traffic. He has come out on the winning side of those events more times than he can remember, but also has been on the short end of the stick, most of which he does remember. On Saturday night, he masterfully used lapped traffic to his advantage as he picked up a thrilling win in the finale of the Badger Classic at Charter Raceway Park in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.

Kinser dove under Jason Meyers on the back straightaway on the 33rd lap to take the lead after chasing him for nearly half the race. One lap earlier, Kinser inched ahead of Meyers exiting the fourth turn, but Meyers charged down the front straightaway to officially lead at the line. Kinser stayed right on Meyers in turns one and two, setting himself up to make the pass for the lead and ultimately the win on the following lap. On the final lap, Meyers gained ground on the back straightaway and tried everything he could exiting the third and fourth turns, as the pair thundered down the front straightaway coming up just 0.253 seconds short at the line.

The $10,000 win was his fifth of the season, and the 548th of his Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series career. Kinser has won twice at Charter Raceway Park in his career and ha won 18 times in the state of Wisconsin.

"You had to have patience tonight, said Kinser. "You were not going to pass him on an open run. You had to wait until we got some lapped cars. He looked like he got a little bit loose at the end, and I got freed up enough to get up a little higher going into (turn) one and got off it a lot better. We got some good runs on him and when we got to the lapped car, I got a good run on the back stretch on him."

Several times over the course of the race, Kinser looked to the low side of the track aboard the Q Oil Maxim, as he looked to get a run on Meyers. The 20-time series champion lined up third for the 40-lap event and had a couple of epic battles early in the race with Kerry Madsen. Kinser got around the reigning Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year on the 15th lap, and promptly began to work on tracking down Meyers.

"We hung around and were there when we got to the lapped cars," explained the winner. "I made a couple of good moves and got a run on Jason (Meyers) and then just held on the last eight or so laps."

The race began with a red flag before a single lap was in the books, leading to a complete restart. On both starts, Meyers led from the pole into turn one, with Madsen chasing him.

Early in the race, Craig Dollansky tried a couple of moves on Kinser as the pair battled for the third spot, with Kinser retaining the position each time. While this battled raged, Meyers began to pull away from the pair, along with Madsen who was running second. Though once in heavy traffic, that lead shrunk and Madsen was able to get a couple of runs on Meyers, but could not quite make a pass. At this same time, Kinser and Dollansky also pulled to within a few car length of the lead duo.

Madsen actually got around Meyers in turns one and two prior to the halfway point of the race, though he slipped up the front on the back straightaway, allowing Meyers to power back by him. While in heavy traffic, Dollansky dove under both Madsen and Kinser to take the second spot in turn three, but also slipped up the track and when the trio crossed the line, Dollansky remained fourth.

Kinser moved into second on the 15th lap and just two laps later the second red flag of the night flew, which was opened up so the car could refuel and make adjustments.

"Everything worked out and we got to the checkers and that was the main thing," Kinser noted. "We didn't really change anything and the red didn't really effect us."

The final stoppage of the night occurred with 15 laps remaining. On the ensuing restart, Kinser dove under Meyers in both turns one and two and three and four as he nearly took the lead. Meyers got back up to the speed on the second lap after the restart and began to pull away in open track.

Within a couple of laps, he was back in heavy lapped traffic, giving Kinser a chance to gain ground. After having to get out of the throttle on the front straightaway as he tried to get around a lapped machine, Meyers gave up his lead with Kinser quickly pouncing on him. It was in traffic that Kinser was able to get around Meyers to pick up his second career win at Charter Raceway Park.

Kinser began the night by setting fast time for the fifth time this season, and followed that up with a runner-up finish in the first heat race which earned him a spot in the Crane Cams Dash, where he finished third to earn a second-row starting spot in the 40-lap A-Feature.

"You definitely need to get in the dash," noted Kinser. "We didn't get the best pill draw (for the dash), but worked our way to third. We had a pretty good race car all night and were able to make up some ground."

The win was the 19th Top-Five finish of the season for Kinser, who has picked up 11 Top-Five finishes in the last month. He is currently fifth in the championship standings and has been one of the most consistent drivers over the last month and a half.

"Right now these guys are so tough that you can win one night and run at the middle of the pack the next night," said the native of Bloomington, Indiana. "You just have to be right, at the right time."

Meyers wound up leading 32 laps on Saturday night and finished second, as he looks for his first career win at Charter Raceway Park. He has 11 consecutive Top-Five finishes, with nine of those being on the podium as he chases his seventh win of the season aboard the GLR Investments KPC.

"We had a great race car tonight and there is only one word for it, and that's disappointing, to lead all of those laps and give it away," said Meyers. "We got a little tight in lapped traffic and just kind of gave it away to him. I had a great car and these guys did a great job tonight. I just feel bad that I gave it away tonight."

Kerry Madsen started second and ran in the Top-Three all night, coming home third in the TK Concrete Maxim. The native of St. Mary's, NSW, Australia has 25 Top-10 finishes this season as he closes in on his first win of the year.

"We're pretty happy," Madsen said. "We broke a shock bolt somehow with about 20 laps to go and I hung on for third. I'm happy about that. We're doing a good job. Obviously we want to win some, and I have to thank my owner Tony Vermeer and TK Concrete for giving us this opportunity. We've been quick and it's good to get a good finish and hopefully we can get some momentum going."

Craig Dollansky finished fourth in the Snap-on Tools Maxim, after battling Madsen and Kinser for a number of laps for the second and third positions. He was three and four-wide a couple of times as he looked for a way around the pair.

"I would have liked to have been geared a little bit differently," shared Dollansky. "Every time that I was able to try and make a pass, it seemed like we bogged a little too much. We were battling with our car and just kind of hanging in there in the Top-Five and really couldn't do much more than that."

Donny Schatz, the two-time defending series champion was fifth in the Armor All J&J and remains the only driver that has finished in the Top-10 in every event this season. Terry McCarl was sixth in the Big Game Treestands Eagle. Joey Saldana came from the 21st starting spot to finish seventh in the Budweiser/Open Joist Mopar-powered JEI to earn the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award. Daryn Pittman was eighth in the Titan Garages Maxim, with Jason Sides in ninth, piloting the Wetherington Tractor Service Maxim, and Jac Haudenschild rounded out the Top-10 driving the Owens-Corning Fiberglass Maxim.

Meyers began the night by turning in the fourth fastest lap in time trials to earn two bonus points in the championship standings. He also gained a few more points on Donny Schatz, as he finished three spots better than the two-time defending series champion, as he chases his first series title.

"We feel great with how the season has gone so far," said the native of Clovis, California. "These motors are running great and the car is running well. The team is doing an awesome job. Everybody is working very well together. This is a little hiccup, but these guys are tough and they know what goes into this. We're a little disappointed tonight, but we'll bounce back."

Madsen battled Meyers and Kinser for most of the race and could not quite get a good enough run to pass either. He has four career Top-10 finishes at the high-banked 1/3-mile in just a handful of starts.

"We had our opportunities to get back by Steve (Kinser) and could not get it done," noted Madsen. "We had an opportunity to get by Jason (Meyers) early and couldn't get it done. We're happy with a podium and we'll go on from there."

The Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series returns to action on Tuesday, August 12 at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, North Dakota.

* FAST QUALIFIER: Steve Kinser paced the 33 cars that took time with an AMB i.t. timed lap around the high-banked 1/3-mile oval at 11.561 seconds at 103.694 mph. For his qualifying effort, Kinser earned five bonus points. The next four fastest qualifiers also earned bonus points, including: Jac Haudenschild (4), Sam Hafertepe Jr. (3), Jason Meyers (2), and Paul McMahan (1).
