Blaney Wins Inaugural Gold Eagle Rite of Spring Race By Richard Day BEAVER DAM, WI (May 5) - Dave Blaney passed Jac Haudenschild during the opening lap and held off a last-lap challenge by Sammy Swindell to win the Inaugural Gold Eagle Rite of Spring event before a standing-room-only crowd at Beaver Dam Raceway Sunday. The $6,000 victory, the second of the season for the defending Skoal Outlaw Series champion, pushed him past Jeff Swindell into third place in the point standings. Blaney, the third-fastest qualifier in the 58-car field, earned the right to start the 30-lap "A" Feature on the pole by following Haudenschild across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. He chased "The Wild Child" down the front straightaway within seconds after the green flag fell, then steered the #10 Vivarin J&J into the high groove in turn one to take the lead. "The Buckeye Bullet" was five car-lengths ahead of Haudenschild by the end of the second lap, and caught the back-markers three laps later. The #71M EcoWater Systems Maxim suffered a torn right rear brake line late in the third lap, which forced Stevie Smith to drive it without the benefit of brakes during the final 27 laps. He battled Swindell for three laps before Sammy passed him for third place with a low move into the third corner late in lap six. Although Steve Kinser and Danny Lasoski passed him during the first half of the race, Stevie managed to hold off World of Outlaws points leader Mark Kinser to claim sixth place. Blaney lapped almost half the field during the first nine laps, but lost his comfortable advantage when Joey Saldana collided with a spinning Frank Filsko late in the 11th lap, bringing out the caution flag. Randy Hannagan took the #75 Mopar Maxim for a spin in turn three when the green flag replaced the yellow, forcing another restart. With three lapped cars separating him from "The Wild Child," Blaney raced away from his closest pursuers when the race resumed. He increased his advantage as Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell pressured Haudenschild for the runner-up spot. Kinser caught Swindell and raced wheel-to-wheel with him during lap 14, but was unable to make the pass. Sammy broke away from Kinser the next time around and steered his #1 ChannelLock Gambler deep into the second corner to pass "The Wild Child." Blaney slowed in dense lapped traffic during the 18th lap, allowing Swindell to narrow the gap to a half-straightaway. Sammy was still gaining on "The Buckeye Bullet" when Kinser steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim around Haudenschild high in turn two early in the 25th lap. Keeping the #1 in the high groove, Swindell closed to within six car-lengths as Blaney lapped up to 10th place with three laps remaining. Sammy caught the leader on the back straightaway during the white-flag lap, and they raced side-by-side through turn three. Blaney stayed in the low groove and won a drag race to the checkered flag by two car-lengths. "It got to where I couldn't run very well on the bottom, so I was just trying to hang on at the end," Blaney said. Swindell, the runner-up for the third time in the last three races, said, "I would like to have had another lap or two. I struggled with lapped traffic a little bit in the middle of the race, but we came on at the end." Steve Kinser's third-place finish, coupled with cousin Mark's seventh-place run, narrowed the margin in their battle for the points lead to 24 points. Steve also received his fourth EcoWater Quick-Time Award of the season for pacing the qualifying session with a record- setting 12.737-second run around Beaver Dam's high-banked, 1/3-mile oval. Haudenschild held off Lasoski to claim fourth place. Rounding out the top 10 in the main event were Smith, Mark Kinser, First Quaker State Heat Race winner Joe Gaerte, Lance Blevins and "B" Feature winner Johnny Herrera. The next stop for the Skoal Outlaw Series' fire-breathing, mud- slinging sprint car racing teams is Hartford Speedway in Hartford, MI, on Friday.
