Swindell Extends Two Winners' Streak at Battleground By Richard Day HOUSTON, TX (July 28) - Two Winners Racing has owned Battleground Speedway this year. In March, Greg Hodnett led all 30 laps in the first World of Outlaws "A" Feature victory of his career. Jeff Swindell duplicated the feat Friday when a record crowd packed the stands around the high- banked, 3/8-mile oval. The $6,000 victory, Swindell's third of the year, left him only six points behind Stevie Smith in their battle for fourth place in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings. Jeff also won a World of Outlaws main event at Battleground on March 25, 1994. Swindell earned the right to start the "A" Feature on the outside pole by executing a last-lap pass of EcoWater Fast-Time Award winner Dave Blaney in the Vivarin Dash. Smith won the five-lap race, and started the main event on the pole. "Passing Blaney in the Vivarin Dash was a big part of this win," Swindell said later. "That allowed me to start on the front row." Smith and Swindell raced wheel-to-wheel into the first corner within seconds after the green flag fell in the "A" Feature. Jeff steered the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim high into the second corner to take the lead. "I ran high on the start because I knew Stevie would dive low in (turns) one and two," Jeff said. "I went high, and the car felt good there, so I stayed there. I had planned to run low; I did run low in three and four." A close battle for fourth place raged several car-lengths behind the leaders as Andy Hillenburg, Jac Haudenschild, Second Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Lance Blevins and Gary Wright raced four-abreast through turn two in the opening lap. A third-corner crash with Gus Wasson, Larry Hartwell and Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Ronald Laney knocked Blevins out of the race late in the second lap. Haudenschild drove the #22 Pennzoil Maxim around Hillenburg in turn three to take over fourth place as the green flag replaced the red. Hillenburg regained the spot two laps later with a fourth-corner pass. Hillenburg made a run at Blaney early in the fifth lap, then steered his #2 STP J&J deep in the third corner to take over third place seconds later. Swindell was 10 car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when a fuel pump malfunction caused John Bankston to stop on the back straightaway late in lap 12. As the race resumed, "The Buckeye Bullet" raced back into third place with a high move around Hillenburg in turn three. The leaders caught the backmarkers during the 17th lap, but were taken out of lapped traffic three laps later when Hartwell stopped in turn three with a blown engine. Blaney used a daring inside move to pass Smith for the runner-up spot on the ensuing restart. Haudenschild also raced past as Stevie hit the brakes to avoid a collision. Smith regained third place with eight laps remaining when he steered the #71M EcoWater Maxim deep into the fourth corner to pass "The Wild Child." Swindell was eight car-lengths ahead of Blaney when he took the checkered flag. Smith held off Hillenburg for his third straight third-place finish. Rounding out the top 10 in the "A" Feature were Haudenschild, Wright, Randy Hannagan, Hodnett, Danny Lasoski and First Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Keith Kauffman. Blaney, the leader in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings, earned his first EcoWater Fast-Time Award of the year by pacing the qualifying session with a 13.437-second lap. Dodie Miller of Seabrook, TX, received the Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award for racing into 13th place from his ninth-row starting position.
