Swindell Extends Two Winners' Streak at Battleground By Richard Day HOUSTON, TX (October 18) - Two Winners Racing has owned Battleground Speedway this season. In March, Greg Hodnett led all 30 laps in the first World of Outlaws "A" Feature victory of his career. Then, after duplicating his teammate's feat in July, Jeff Swindell made it a clean sweep for Tom Wimmer and Bob Kramer's team at Houston's semi-banked, 3/8-mile oval Wednesday. When announcer Jack Miller asked him if there was something about Battleground Speedway that especially appealed to him, Swindell said, "I don't know; we just seem to run well here. I guess you can call this Jeff's house." Californian Paul McMahan appeared to be taking over "Jeff's house" early, when he claimed the EcoWater Fast-Time Award and earned the right to start the 30-lap main event on the front row by following Andy Hillenburg across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. He burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature, and led the first 16 laps. Former World of Outlaws champions Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell had their problems early. Kinser, a two-time winner at Battleground, suffered a blown engine during the Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race. Swindell, winner of the World of Outlaws' first race at Battleground in 1986, was also forced to run the "B" Feature when a broken heim joint in his front right suspension caused him to crash into the front-straightaway fence during the Second Snap-on Tools Heat Race. Sammy won the "B" Feature and Kinser finished third to qualify for the main event. Hillenburg battled McMahan for the lead from the time the green flag fell until he drove his #2 STP J&J into first place late in the 17th lap. They raced wheel-to-wheel down the front straightaway and into the first corner before McMahan surged ahead in turn two. Swindell was also on the move during the opening lap, passing Jeff Shepard for third place. Jac Haudenschild challenged Shepard for 2 1/2 laps before taking over fourth place with a turn-four pass late in the third lap. The leaders were approaching lapped traffic two laps later when Gary Wright took the #9 Action Rent-to-Own Schnee for a spin in the second corner. The caution allowed the leaders to restart the race with a clear track ahead of them. McMahan was two car-lengths ahead of Hillenburg when he caught the backmarkers during the 10th lap. They raced side-by-side through turn one the next time around, but McMahan maintained the lead. Swindell caught the leaders midway through the 12th lap, and steered the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim deep into the fourth corner to pass Hillenburg for the runner-up spot. Andy regained second place the next time around, and continued to pursue the leader. Lapped cars delayed Hillenburg's charge into first place until he took the low line through turn four to take the lead late in lap 17. McMahan attempted to return the favor in the same spot a lap later, but was unable to complete the pass. Swindell passed McMahan for the runner-up spot with a first-corner move in dense lapped traffic with 10 laps remaining. He caught the leader the next time around as Hillenburg searched for a clean route through the backmarkers. Jeff chased Andy for two laps before taking the lead with a low move into the fourth corner. Swindell gradually extended his advantage during the final six laps, and took the checkered flag with Hillenburg racing through turn four. "I was just riding around there for a while, but with about 10 (laps) to go I figured I'd better get in a hurry and make my move," Swindell said in victory lane. "It didn't look like anybody was slowing down, so saving my tires wasn't doing any good." McMahan held off a late charge by Keith Kauffman to finish third. The #10 Vivarin J&J slowed as Fourth Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Dave Blaney entered turn three during the final lap, allowing "The Wild Child" and Sammy Swindell to pass him. Following the 1995 World of Outlaws champion across the finish line were Shepard, Kinser and Hodnett. Sammy received the Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award for driving his #1 Hooters Gambler into sixth place from outside the seventh row.
