Outlaws' Allard to Take Leave of Absence

KNOXVILLE, IA (June 24) -- Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate Jonathan Allard is taking a leave of absence from the World of Outlaws Sprint Series to take care of his vision problems.

An eye doctor examined Allard Monday, the day after he drove the #35 PRT Travel Maxim to a career-best fifth-place finish in the Eagle Nationals at Eagle Raceway. The 2002 Silver Dollar Speedway champion has an appointment with a specialist in Wichita, KS, July 1st.

Allard has been experiencing night vision problems since crashing during the Second Heat Race at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park June 2nd.

"The doctor told us Monday his good eye takes care of everything during the day, but his eyes fight each other at night," Crew Chief Mike Thurman said Thursday. "He was fine racing in the early evening daylight Sunday, but he has problems at night."

Ironically, Allard has been one of the hottest drivers in World of Outlaws Sprint Series' "Mean 15" since the crash, racing into the top 12 in all six main events. Jonathan ranks 13th in the point standings.
