Could the World Endurance Championship be returning to Canada in 2015?

WEC heading to Montréal?

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has been rumored to be in the running for a WEC race in 2015. The track is known most notably for its annual Formula One event, which it has hosted since 1978 (with the exception of 1987 and 2009).

Montréal is obviously, already FIA-approved and a WEC event wouldn't be something entirely new to the circuit. WEC's predecessor - the World Sportscar Championship, raced at the popular Canadian road course 24 years ago.

In September of 1990, they held a round there in a race that ended disastrously. The event was halted just past the halfway point due to a massive accident, instigated by a manhole cover. Jésus Pareja struck it and a multi-car incident ensued, with Pareja's car erupted into flames. That race was also the debut of the legendary Peugeot 905.

Montréal would love to have another major race, especially after losing their NASCAR event following the 2012 season. It could be part of the North American swing when the pinnacle of sports car racing travels to Austin, Texas for the Six Hours of COTA.

If this event does indeed come to fruition, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve would make a perfect addition to the already stellar lineup on the World Endurance Championship calendar.

Why BMW shouldn't be overlooked on its return to prototypes

OPINION: While the focus has been on the exciting prospect of Ferrari vs Porsche at the Le Mans 24 Hours next year, BMW’s factory return to endurance racing should not be ignored. It won't be at the French classic next year as it focuses efforts on the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, but could be a dark horse in 2024 when it returns to La Sarthe with the crack WRT squad.
