Nelson’s Column: Fun in Mexico, gearing up for LMP1 future
Motorsport.com columnist Nelson Piquet Jr has been his usual jetsetting self – in more ways that one this month…

Hi everyone,
It’s been quite an interesting March for me!
First up we went to Mexico for the very first time in Formula E. That was a race I was really looking forward to as I expected the Mexican fans to give us a really good reception.
We weren’t disappointed and we had an incredible crowd of 40,000 on race day who cheered and supported the series. It was interesting to race on a traditional circuit rather than our usual street circuits.
While I don’t know if it really suited our cars that well, driving in front of those crowds in the stadium section of the circuit was really something unique.
I think that Mexico has already set itself up as a venue we must go back to.
Jetsurfing fun and games
Ahead of the race in Mexico I also tried something new. I flew to Cancun before going to Mexico City and tried jetsurfing.
I love watersports like wakeboarding so this was something similar to that but jet powered. It was so much fun and we got some very cool footage from drone cameras as I actually wore my Formula E race suit to do it!
New LMP1 adventure with Rebellion
In seemingly a month of firsts, I had my first experience of my brand new racing toy; my World Endurance Championship and Le Mans 24 Hours Rebellion Racing R-One LMP1 AER-powered car.
I participated in the Prologue testing at Paul Ricard and it was a good few days. I really enjoyed getting to grips with the car and cannot wait to compete for the first time in April with my teammates Nico Prost and Nick Heidfeld at the Six Hours of Silverstone.
Thanks,
Nelson
