Craft Racing and Bamboo Racing have merged to form a global race team.
Bamboo Engineering, best known for its World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) and GP3 successes, and Craft Racing, regional technical partner team of Aston Martin Racing and synonymous with GT and Prototype racing in Asia, have joined forces to create a new global race team named Craft-Bamboo Racing.
The new team will be headed up by Richard Coleman, who has been appointed as Group GEO, and there will be offices in the UK, Malaysia and Hong Kong.
“We decided to draw upon the extensive experience of both teams and bring it all together under one roof,” explains Coleman. “Bamboo Engineering and Craft Racing have had a good relationship for a number of years now and share the same goals – we both want to run world championship-winning teams.”
Craft Racing has been a dominant force in the Asian GT scene in recent years. It has competed in GT Asia, the Malaysian Super Series, Dubai 24 Hours and the Asian Le Mans series and, this year, has an invitational entry into the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
“In just a few years we have made a big impact in sportscar racing in Asia,” comments Frank Yu, Chairman of the new venture. “We wanted to take this to the next level and become a world-wide team competing for world-titles. Joining forces with Bamboo Engineering, which has experience at racing at the top-level, will jump start our team to take the next step and bridge platforms across the continents.
Bamboo Engineering, based near Silverstone, is most famous for its WTCC and GP3 race-winning teams. In 2013, it took the WTCC independents’ championship title and placed third overall.
“Despite our success in WTCC, we made the decision to move into GT racing for the 2014 season,“ explains Coleman. “Of course, we are still involved in touring car projects and would hope to see a return to the WTCC at some point but, for this season, Craft-Bamboo Racing is focusing its efforts on the FIA World Endurance Championship.”
Craft-Bamboo Racing will continue to work alongside Aston Martin Racing in the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). Bamboo Engineering joined the Aston Martin Racing works team at the start of this season and the #99 Craft Bamboo Vantage GTE will contest the entire championship including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The new outfit will also run two Aston Martin Vantage GT3s in GT Asia and the 12 Hours of Sepang and an Oak Morgan-Judd LMP2 and two Ligier CN Prototypes in the Asian Le Mans Series.
