Carnage ensues as rain hits COTA

Absolute chaos has ensued at COTA. Light rain hit COTA with four hours and 41 minutes left, but at approximately the four hour and twenty minute mark, the rain started to come down in buckets at the track and yet, most of the field continued to race on slick tires, due to it being isolated to certain portions of the circuit.

A number of cars lost control, including most of the frontrunners. The leading Toyotas both spun out of control in the madness. Mike Conway actually went around twice. He went for a slide through turns six and seven before going off a second time in the same corner his teammate's car sat.

The the No. 20 Porsche also had multiple offs during the downpour. Timo Bernhard was piloting the car when he lost control, making contact with a soft wall. Soon after, he aquaplaned once more, blowing by stricken GT and LMP cars on his way through the gravel trap. The car was removed from the gravel and he quickly jumped back behind the wheel.

Most of the cars that went off did so in turn twelve. The Audi duo, which escaped unscathed despite going off themselves, are currently scored first and second.

Time continued to click away as the race sits under a red flag. The field got back moving under the safety car with three hours and 35 minutes remaining. No cars took on major damage in the plethora of incidents.
