Chuck Etchells defeats Ron Capps in the Funnycar finals of the Atsco Nationals at Firebird Raceway in Chandler, Arizona, USA. First all-Camaro Funnycar finals in NHRA history (1998).

February 23
The Jaguar XJR-14 makes its race debut in the IMSA Camel GT race at Miami, Florida, USA. Davy Jones starts it on pole but finishes sixth behind the winning Nissan NPTI-91 of Geoff Brabham (1992).

February 24
Triumph announces their return to motorcycle racing after more than 25 years. They will compete in the British Supersport Championship (2003).

February 25
F1 racer Francois Cevert born (1939).

February 26
Mario Andretti makes his first Daytona 500 start, driving a Chevrolet for Smokey Yunick. Richard Petty, driving a Plymouth, wins the race, which is shortened by two laps because of rain (1966).
