In the his second visit to the streets of Adelaide in the Strathfield Formula Adelaide, Gerard "Pete" Lovely set the quickest time of 1:33.76 to be the top qualifier after the first session today.
Driving a Ford Cosworth 3litre Lotus 49, the American adapted to the streets quickly allowing him to set his fastest lap on lap 5 in the shortened qualifying session.
The Lotus driven by Lovely this weekend is owned by himself and is the car that Jim Clark won first time out in 1967 at the Dutch Grand Prix.
Second fastest in today¹s practice session was the Brabham BT11A driven and owned by Mike Ryves with a time of 1:36.89 followed by Geoff Farmer in his Lotus 49 Cosworth with a time of 1:37.27.
The qualifying session got off to a bad start for Sir Jack Brabham on the starting grid when the clutch failed on his Brabham BT24. The car stalled on the grid and forced Sir jack to drive the car without a clutch for the qualifying.
"When I went to take off at the start the engine just stalled on me," Sir Jack said.
"I knew there was a problem but once I got up to speed the it seemed to disappear. I know the crew will work this evening to rectify the problem."
Another driver to come to grief on the streets of Adelaide today was the 43-year-old New Jersey resident, Todd Morici in the lone Ferrari of the field.
"There was some oil on the track as you braked going into turn 4 and I knew it was there but just got into the corner a little deep and locked the front brakes," Morici said.
"By that time I was carrying too much speed and the car just lost traction. I tried despretly to keep the car going but the engine had stalled and I was forced to sit the rest of the qualifying session out.
Three members of the famous Brabham family will race against each other for the first time tomorrow when Sir Jack and sons, Geoff and Gary Brabham, do battle in the final qualifying session trying to set the fastest qualifying time for tomorrow¹s opening race.
Race one of the Strathfield Formula Adelaide will be held at 12:25 Saturday 9th April.
