Race 5 - The Coys Cup for pre-'66 Single Seater Racing Cars
20 minutes + 1 lap
Frank Sytner won his second race of the day with a dominant victory in his Brabham BT4. However, the drive of the race must go to Dickie Attwood in the BRM 261. After starting the race in 14th place he powered his way through the field to finish in an impressive second place.
As the cars took the green light it was pole position holder Frank Sytner and John Harper, also in a Brabham BT4, wheel to wheel as they rounded the first corner. The two Brabham drivers were battling hard through out the opening lap and it was Sytner who got the upper hand as they began lap two. Rob Jolley, in the Cooper Climax T45/51, was holding onto 3rd place as the rest of the field started to get strung out. Sytner started to open up a small gap on Harper, giving him some much needed breathing space, while behind the leading cars Attwood was moving through the field.
At the end of the third lap Dickie Attwood was battling with Ted Rollason for sixth place and it wasn't long before he had moved ahead of the Cooper and was tracking down the fifth placed driver. All the way down the field cars were fighting wheel to wheel and there was wonderful sight of the Brabham of Spencer Flack and Lotus of Chris Smith side by side as they rounded the final turn on the Rockingham banked oval track.
Meanwhile at the front Frank Sytner was striding away from the rest, while Attwood had moved into third place. He was catching second place man John Harper at a staggering three seconds a lap when Harper slowed and pulled into the pit lane, his car clearly suffering from a mechanical problem.
At the flag it was Frank Sytner who waved to the crowd, eighteen seconds ahead of Attwood, with Rob Jolley six seconds further back in third. The cars will line up tomorrow afternoon with Sytner and Attwood lining up on the front row of the grid.
