74 year old American Pete Lovely put his race two problems behind him in his Lotus 49B Cosworth to take a hard fought victory ahead of Geoff Farmer and the Brabham BT11A of Mike Ryves in the final Strathfield Formula Adelaide event.
Lovely had his luck turn in his favour when Farmer was forced to start from the pit lane but held of the challenge of hard charging Farmer over the final laps.
"It is a real good thing to finish with a victory in the final event of the weekend and really will make the trip worthwhile with a victory and a second place." Said Lovely
"Unfortunately for Geoff (Farmer) he was forced to start from pit lane as he suffered some problems during the warm up lap but he drove well to challenge at the end"
The Lotus 49B of Lovely developed a misfire in the warm up lap.
"In the last race the engine got a little warm on the start line so we decided not to warm the car up for this race, but when we started it up it was too rich so I had to come into the pits and alter the mixture." commented Farmer
"Although it would have been nice to finish with three victories for the weekend the team is very happy with the result."
A delighted Mike Ryves was the first Australian owned and driven car to finish on the podium in his Brabham BT11A.
"It was an absolute honour to be racing with such competitors as Sir Jack and to be racing wheel to wheel with him was a buzz." said Ryves
"And to be driving one of the oldest cars in the field and finish in third is a great result for the team and it will be a good trip home after this podium finish."
Unfortunately for Sir Jack Brabham the weekend finished on a sour note when a timing chain broke on lap 4 in the Dimmer ownen Brabham BT24/3 whilst sitting in third position.
Another non finisher was the BRM of Robs Lamplough who was forced to watch from the sidelines when a bolt sheared on the driveline leaving him standed out on the circuit. <pre> Race Results Race 3 Pos - Driver - Car - Time 6 laps 1 - Pete Lovely - Lotus 49B Cosworth - 9:44.69 2 - Geoff farmer - Lotus 49 Cosworth - +0.16 3 - Mike Ryves - Brabham BT11A Climax - +1.31 4 - John Dawson-Damer - Lotus 49B Cosworth - +9.27 5 - Peter Simms - Brabham BT23A - +9.87
