Norm Nelson, Roger McCluskey Cars to See Action at The Milwaukee Mile
(West Allis, WI) April 12, 2004 -- Stock car driving legends Norm Nelson, Roger McCluskey, Fred Lorenzen, and Dave Marcis were among those who captured the imagination and admiration of thousands of race fans attending stock car races during the 1950's, 60's and 70's at The Milwaukee Mile.
The familiar paint schemes and body styles of USAC Stock Car and NASCAR legends return to America's Legendary Oval with the Grand National Vintage Racing group, who will showcase their classic stock car-bodied racers on the speedway Thursday night, June 24, a kick-off to the first nighttime NASCAR event weekend at the historic track.
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series "Black Cat® Fireworks 200" race is set for an 8:00pm start on Friday night, June 25, and the stars of the NASCAR Busch Series take the green flag for 250 laps on Saturday night, June 26 at 8:00pm.
"As we build on 100 years of history and tradition, we believe this is a great addition to one of our biggest weekends of racing at The Milwaukee Mile," commented Mark Perrone, Vice President & General Manager of the historic speedway. "The cars are going to dazzle the crowd with some close racing, harking back to visions of days gone by in classic stock car races held here. We invite the generations of stock car racing fans to come and enjoy a fun night of racing for the family-friendly ticket price of just $5, with free admission for kids aged 12 and under."
The owners and drivers of the Grand National Vintage Racing group have painstakingly brought back to life the visual look of the 1968 Plymouth Roadrunner driven by Richard Petty, the '69 Ford Torino Talladega driven by David Pearson, the '64 Ford Galaxy driven by Junior Johnson, '60 Ford Starliner of Ned Jarrett, '63 ½ Ford Galaxy of Tiny Lund and other racing legends, with an anticipated field of 30 cars competing in a grand feature event set to get the green flag at 8:00pm CST on June 24. The car bodies are mounted on modern-day chassis, allowing for the latest in safety technology for the drivers to compete safely at relatively high speeds.
Ken Gilbert, spokesman of Grand National Vintage Racing exclaimed, "We can't wait to compete on The Milwaukee Mile! Our guys put a lot of time and effort into their cars, and to get to race on the 'Mile where there is so much stock car racing history, it's a great opportunity for all of us. We've had a chance to show Junior Johnson, Ned Jarrett and Paul Goldsmith personally what we're doing and I think they're impressed with what Grand National Vintage Racing represents."
