Famous racing cars to Adelaide for Easter Historic Racing at Mallala.
Three famous cars of International racing significance will compete here over Easter.
The cars will feature with 140 other historic racing cars on Easter Saturday and Sunday at a race meeting open to the Public at the Mallala Motor Sport Park circuit, north of Adelaide.
The three International cars comprise two supercharged 1930's E.R.A.'s (English Racing Automobiles -no. R1A and R21C), and the 1952 Indianapolis front-engined Miller known as the 'Jim Robbins Special'.
This will be the first time that such rare cars of International standing will have appeared in S.A. at the annual All-Historic race meeting which is conducted by the Historic Racing Register of the Sporting Car Club of S.A. Inc.
The entry of the E.R.A.s will give Kevin Shearer, a well- known S.A. racing driver, to again compete with the cars---the last time such an encounter having occurred being in 1978 at the Phillip Island circuit, when two E.R.A's were brought out from England for a meeting celebrating the 50th. Anniversary of the Australian Grand Prix.
At that meeting, Kevin raced his 'Ford A Special' in spirited battle with the E.R.A.s in a 40 lap race that thrilled the crowd. The 'Ford A Special' has recently been re-built to be ready for this return encounter. The E.R.A's will be driven by Greg Snape and Ian Tate.
The E.R.A. cars were the most successful English-built cars to compete against the mighty marques of Mercedes-Benz, Auto-Union and Maserati in the 1930's.
Their spectacular performance, thoroughbred appearance and distinctive exhaust notes draw enthusiasts whenever these valuable cars are raced.
The 'Jim Robbins Special' represents a golden age of racing at the Indianapolis circuit in the U.S.A., when the big front-engined cars were so spectacular, and to see this car run at the tight but fast Mallala circuit will be particularly interesting. It will be raced for Dean Butler, an American entrepreneur and car collector who focuses on historic racing' by John Caffin.
The entry list of cars competing at the meeting shows a wide spread of competition vehicles from early cars through to about 1980. They will be racing in a full programme of events.
