YVAN MULLER TO CO-DRIVE WITH LOWNDES FOR THE BETTA ELECTRICAL SANDOWN 500
Triple Eight's British Touring Car Champion and current BTCC front runner, Yvan Muller is paired with Team Betta Electrical's Craig Lowndes for the Betta Electrical Sandown 500, while current HPDC V8 Supercar Series leader Adam Macrow will share Car# 88 with Steve Ellery, it was announced at the team's Brisbane headquarters today.
Muller will join Lowndes in Car# 888 in what will be the three-time V8 Supercar Champion's ninth attempt at the Sandown 500 event.
For French born Muller who is currently second in the BTCC Championship, this will be his fourth trip to Australia for the famed endurance events, having first raced at Bathurst in 2000.
Team Principal Roland Dane said recent performance and consistency proved the deciding factors in pairing Muller with Lowndes.
"Both drivers are enjoying similar racing success, with Craig winning two rounds of the V8 Supercar series and Yvan enjoying the podium 13 times so far, yet significantly their seasons are still gaining momentum," Dane said.
"Yvan has been consistently fast all year and from our learning's last year, has proven to be particularly adaptable to the Sandown and Bathurst track layouts."
"Adam and Steve are also a competitive combination, as both are keen to make a significant impact on the Championship's longer races" said Dane.
Lowndes, pleased with the pairing said, "Yvan's BTCC experiences speak volumes for his abilities, particularly his recent results and pole positions.
"I'm sure other teams will view our partnering as formidable.
"We both really enjoy the challenges that the longer races bring particularly if we have poor weather, where Yvan's ice racing background and my wet weather 'webbed gloves' should hold us in good stead!" said Lowndes.
Keen to improve on his third placing in 2003 Ellery said, "I'm really comfortable with Adam joining me in Car #88 as we both respond to a similar set up and his lead in the HPDC Championship demonstrates great consistency.
"With my best result in 2003 being third, obviously both Adam and I are keen to better this result"
Recognising that consistency is the key for both Sandown and Bathurst, the Team has been intensely focused on ensuring Steve Ellery's car will be ready in time, after the damage sustained at last weekend's Oran Park round.
The Betta Electrical Sandown 500 will be held from September 9 - 11 at Victoria's Sandown International Raceway.
