TITLE BJR PRESERVES TYRE BANK
Disparity in tyre choice made today's V8 Supercar practice session at Winton impossible to unravel according to Brad Jones Racing, who opted to save its new tyres for qualifying tomorrow.
The soft-tyre-only format is being trialed again this weekend but, unlike at Queensland Raceway two weeks ago, teams were not given an additional set of the sprint tyres to practice on today.
BJR opted to save its five allocated sets for tomorrow but most other teams chose to sacrifice a set to work on set-up today meaning practice times are hard to compare.
Jason Richards finishing 23rd for Team BOC and Jason Bright finishing 24th for Trading Post Racing but Team boss Brad Jones is untroubled, saying he is confident both are capable of making the top-ten in tomorrow's qualifying at 11.20am.
"The dilemma for all the teams today was whether to try and learn what you might need for qualifying tomorrow on greens or whether to save two sets of green tyres so you get two chances at it in qualifying. We've gone for the strategy of using the greens tomorrow when it counts. I think we've done the best thing by not using them but I guess tomorrow will tell."
Trading Post Racing
"It looks like a lot of guys went out on greens; we can't see why you would do that given the plan is to qualifying as well as you can. I don't see the reason to run greens today when it means you're going to sacrifice them for tomorrow. The times today aren't anything to look into because everyone was on different tyres, so all I can say is that our car is awesome on the hard tyre but it's not transferring to the soft tyre as much as we would like."
Co-Owner "In that session, probably ten or 11 people went out on green tyres but we've elected to save them for qualifying tomorrow when it counts.
"One of the big killers with the soft tyre is age degradation when you're doing lap after lap so now it's very, very difficult to know where we are in relation to other people in the field. We were very tempted to put on a set of greens just to find out, but really it's just practice and I think we're better off saving them so the guys have an extra run in qualifying. We're pretty comfortable that the pace of each of the Jasons is around 10-12th or better."
