Lowndes quickest in Winton

Craig Lowndes fondness for the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx Sprint compound was amplified today with the TeamVodafone driver topping today's V8 Supercar practice sessions at Winton Motor Raceway Lowndes ran two sets of the sprint tyres towards the end of practice, but only for a single flying lap each to gauge heat cycles ahead of tomorrows qualifying and top ten shootout.

Confident with the cars race setup, Lowndes said the team had learnt a lot from racing on the tyres at the Queensland Raceway event a fortnight ago.

"It's nice to be in this position at the moment but it is still early in the weekend," Lowndes said.

"We learnt a lot from running the soft tyres at Queensland Raceway. Firstly getting the right balance in the race setup and secondly getting a heat cycle into the tyres.

"We ran two sets of the softs over a flying lap today and I definitely think we are 90% there with our qualifying setup, which gives us great confidence ahead of tomorrow.

Defending Champion Jamie Whincup ran wide on what would have been his fastest lap and ended the day fifth fastest. "The car feels very good and I am happy with the progress we made today." Whincup said.

"As always on a Friday we made plenty of changes and I am confident we will find a bit more for tomorrow."

Endurance drivers Mark Skaife and Steve Owen were back out on track in TeamVodafone Commodores for the first two practice sessions today and finished their second session of the day sixth and seventh respectively. While Skaife now returns to the commentary box for the weekend Owen will line-up in the Fujitsu Series races.

The V8 Supercars will be back on track for qualifying at 11.20am tomorrow with the Top Ten Shootout to follow at 12.25pm. Race 11 (40-Laps) of the V8 Supercar Championship Series will commence at 3.35pm.
