MciLroy Puts Local Knowledge To Use With Winton GTP Pole
LOCAL knowledge helped put Ford Falcon V8 driver John McIlroy in pole position for round six of the Century Batteries GT Production Series in a wet-and-dry qualifying session today at Winton Motor Raceway in northern Victoria.
McIlroy, who lives in nearby Benalla and has plenty of Winton experience, overcame a collision yesterday with a crash barrier and dodged the rain showers to post a lap time of 1 minute 40.7 seconds, at the head of one of the closest qualifying sessions this season.
Less than 1.2 seconds covered the six fastest cars in the session to set starting positions for the first of tomorrow's two nine-lap races.
Alan Holgersson, from Sydney, finished second in a six-cylinder Toyota Camry, ahead of McIlroy's two main opponents in the Poolrite V8 Touring class, Scott Loadsman (Holden Commodore SS) and Brian Carr (Ford Falcon XR8).
Another local, Martin Doxey, drove his Holden Vectra to sixth outright and first in the 4-Cylinder class.
The GT Production cars will compete in round seven next weekend at the Clarion Sandown 500 meeting at Melbourne's Sandown International Motor Raceway.
