(Fri.) 7 Sept. 2001 / GT Production Series (Rd 6, Winton) - Practice Report
WET weather turned the tables on the usual front-runners in the Century Batteries GT Production Series in official practice today for round six at Winton Raceway, Victoria.
The conditions saw the four-cylinder Holden Astra of Luke Youlden set the fastest lap time over two practice sessions of 1 minute 46.11 seconds.
The 2000 Australian Formula Ford champion went almost 1.7 seconds faster than second-placed Daryl Coon, driving a Ford Falcon XR6. Rally ace Rick Bates was third fastest in a 1.3 litre Daihatsu.
James Philip, in a Falcon XR8, was fastest in the Poolrite V8 Touring class, but only fifth overall despite topping the second session, which was even wetter than the first session.
Leading V8 contender John McIlroy was unable to set a competitive time after hitting the wall in his Falcon XR8, but is expected to be back on track for qualifying tomorrow.
The GT Production cars will compete in round seven next weekend at the Clarion Sandown 500 meeting at Melbourne¹s Sandown International Motor Raceway.
