PERKINS CAUGHT IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AT WINTON
Dodo Racing Team driver Jack Perkins expects to be on the pace tomorrow after a hectic start to Round 3 of the V8 Supercar Championship Series at Winton Motor Raceway in rural Victoria today.
Today saw the first opportunity for all teams to use a set of the new softer, faster but less durable Dunlop option tyres.
As cars circulated at vastly different speeds around the tight 3.0-kilometre Winton layout, Perkins' best laps on the soft tyre were hampered by other cars lapping at a slower pace as a result of using the harder control tyre at the time.
Perkins is pleased with the progress of today's practice and the feel of the #11 Dodo Holden Commodore, confident of a better showing tomorrow in qualifying, when all cars will be on equal terms. As it was, Perkins was 21st and 15th in the two segments of practice with all cars on track, a solid start for the second-generation racer.
When both segments of practice were combined, Garth Tander was left with the fastest time of the day ahead of Jamie Whincup and Lee Holdsworth.
WHAT JACK HAD TO SAY ...
Jack Perkins - #11 Dodo Holden Commodore:
"It was a very confusing day for the Dodo Commodore and our Dodo Racing Team," said Perkins.
"We were not where we wanted to be at the start of practice, on the hard tyre, so we chased our tails a little and didn't get to follow our plan as much as we would have liked.
"I think that we're there, or there abouts, on both tyres and I think that on true pace we are well and truly in the top 20.
"If we can get a good clean run in qualifying on the harder tyre, I think we will be fine.
"The Dodo Commodore seems like it will run well on the normal control tyre. Today we just didn't get a super-fast time in because I was getting held up by guys who were not on the soft tyre at the same time that I was, and therefore they were running a fair bit slower.
"We will get an accurate gauge of where we are at after qualifying tomorrow, when everyone is on the same set-up at the same time. So tomorrow should be a good day for us and we're looking forward to the challenge of coping with something a little bit different."
