Winterbottom: ‘I was nervous before qualifying’

Despite two front row starts and two wins from today’s two V8 Supercars races, Mark Winterbottom says he was nervous about his speed before qualifying at Barbagallo Raceway this morning.

With tyres, or the lack thereof, a hot topic during Friday’s free practice sessions, most drivers went into this morning’s first qualifying session in the dark about their true pace.

After doubling down with two races wins today, Winterbottom admitted even he was worried about where he was speed-wise before his first run on new tyres.

“It was horrible through all of practice, to be honest, then we put tyres on it in quali and it lit up,” he said.

“Going into qualifying, I was really nervous and worried about the car, but just new tyres helped it. I’m not really sure, it’s hard to develop the car when you’re running around on those 100-kay tyres, because it doesn’t handle, even if you’ve got the best set-up. New tyres just tidied it up.”

Winterbottom added that, while he felt he wasn’t as quick as team-mate Chaz Mostert in the first race, his Prodrive FG X was untouchable in the second.

“We tuned the car up for race two, and it was really nice,” he said.

“We pushed on early, and then I tried to manage. It’s nice when you have those races, because they don’t all go that smoothly.

“But we got off the line well, and just managed it from there.”
