Triple Eight V8 Supercars driver Jamie Whincup says there is “light at the end of the tunnel” after finishing fifth in yesterday’s second race in Townsville.
The six-time V8 champion has had a terrible start to the 2015 season by his and Triple Eight’s lofty standards, having endured a four-race run of double digit results leading up to the Townsville event.
While still not on front-running pace in North Queensland, there were positive signs for Whincup, with a ninth on Saturday, and a fifth from P13 on the grid on Sunday.
“As I said at the start of weekend, we were aiming for the Top 10 so fifth was awesome,” he said.
“We ground out all weekend, and to be honest I couldn't be happier. The results sheet in qualifying didn't look good, but we found a massive gain in rear grip. It upset balance which meant we went slower, but we found a big gain which transferred into the race.
“There's still a long way to go, but there's light at the end of the tunnel. It was the first race for a long time I actually enjoyed.”
Whincup, who hasn’t finished on the podium in nine races, is still 391 points behind points leader Mark Winterbottom.
