Queensland's Wayne Wakefield held off Matthew White to win the Konica V8 Supercar Challenge at Bathurst's Mt Panorama this morning.
The two Holden Commodore drivers had a fantastic nose-to-tail battle for the majority of the 30-lap event, which was one of the best support races seen at Mt Panorama.
Sponsored by rival pet foods companies, Uncle Ben's and VIP Petfoods, the pair staged their own dogfight, producing consistent lap times under the 2-minute 14-second barrier.
Only a couple of years ago those lap times would have been good enough to give you a winning race pace in the main V8 Supercar 1000. There was only four seconds separating the pair when they took the chequered flag and Ford driver Kevin Munday was almost half a lap back in third. Queensland driver Michael Simpson was running third after the first lap, but was given a stop-go penalty for jumping the start and dropped back to 10th he raced his way back through the field to eventually finish a strong fourth.
"It was great fun out there, but a pretty tough 30 laps," said Wakefield.
"Matthew pushed me all the way." Both Wakefield and White used today's race as vital track time before tomorrow's V8 Supercar 1000 when they will be co-drivers for Marcos Ambrose and David Besnard respectively.
"Driving my car was like wrestling an alligator today compared with the Stone Brothers car which I am driving tomorrow with Marcos," said Wakefield.
"I think the race today was invaluable preparation for tomorrow's main race." <pre>
