WAYNE GARDNER READY FOR BIG RESULT AFTER 43RD BIRTHDAY

Former world 500cc motorcycle champion Wayne Gardner believes he has his best chance ever of winning a 1000km endurance race at Mt Panorama this weekend.

Gardner will be having his 10th start in a Bathurst1000km enduro on Sunday when he co-drives the Caltex Havoline Ford with David Besnard in the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000.

His comments came today as he celebrated his 43rd birthday in pit lane with the rest of the Stone Brothers Racing crew.

Gardner has driven at Bathurst previously with the Holden Racing Team, with his own Coca-Cola-backed operation and took pole a couple of years ago with Glenn Seton's Ford team his best result being a couple of thirds.

He drove a couple of sprint rounds in the SBR-prepared Caltex Havoline Ford earlier this year and has tested several times. He slotted in these drives between his commitments in the Japanese GT 500 Championship.

Ironically, Gardner was to partner Besnard in last month's VIP Petfoods Queensland 500 at the Queensland Raceway, but was a late withdrawal because of commitments in Japan.

Besnard went on to win the race with Kiwi replacement Simon Wills it was Ford's first win since the same race last year and Besnard's maiden V8 Supercar Championship Series victory.

"This is certainly my best chance ever at Bathurst," said Gardner. "I drove this car earlier this year and it has come a long, long way since then.

"David (Besnard) and Stone Brothers Racing have done a fantastic job improving the car through the year and everything has a great feel about it."

Gardner is hoping that Japanese superstition may also help his chances on Sunday.

"The Japanese tell me that the 42nd year of a person's life is their unluckiest," he said

"All year my Japanese crew have been telling me that my bad luck has been because of my age.

"I am hope they are right and everything turns around on Sunday after all I will be 43."
