(Sun.) 6 May 2001 / Race report - Wakefield Park, NSW

IN the first round of the new GT Production division of the GTP championship, Daryl Coon showed that six cylinders could beat a V8 with two strong wins in his Ford Falcon XR6.

Coon, the defending champion in the Poolrite Six-cylinder Touring class, had entered for the meeting only at the last moment and said he had done so with an incomplete budget and no track time since November.

The two GT Production races produced exciting battles involving Coon, Falcon V8 driver John McIlroy, Robert Chadwick in a Magna, series rookie Alan Holgersson in a Toyota Camry, Richard Winston and Scott Loadsman in Commodore V8s and Brian Carr in a Falcon XR8.

Ex-Formula Ford driver Luke Youlden took two wins in a Holden Astra SRi in the Poolrite Four-cylinder Touring Class.
