LAMBORGHINI driver Paul Stokell topped the timesheets at Wakefield Park, near Goulburn, today on the first day of practice for this weekend's second round of the Megamantis.com Australian Nations Cup Championship.
Stokell, the championship leader, from Melbourne, set a time of 1 minute 2.23 seconds in the first appearance of the exotic Nations Cup cars on the 2.2 km track.
Two-tenths of a second behind Stokell's Lamborghini Diablo SVR came the Porsche GT3 of Peter Fitzgerald, followed by Ferrari's Mark Noske.
Defending champion Jim Richards finished fourth in his Porsche, but said he hoped to go faster in qualifying tomorrow after some overnight changes to his car's suspension.
Stokell said he was delighted to be fastest in a car he did not expect would suit the tight 10-turn track.
"The Lamborghini Diablo is a big heavy car but I guess what it carries in bulk it makes up for in horsepower," the three-time Australian Gold Star driving champion said.
"Still, this is only day one and I'm sure the Ferraris and the Porsches will be closer tomorrow."
Mark Trenoweth's supercharged Jaguar made its long-awaited debut in Nations Cup, but did not record a competitive time after arriving late from its Queensland base. <pre> RESULTS (Practice): 1. P.
