Van Giz fastest, Courtney out

Shane van Gisbergen topped the final pre-qualifying practice session for the V8 Supercars at Sydney Motorsport Park, as Jack Perkins took over James Courtney’s #22 Commodore.

Van Gisbergen set his time late, a soft tyre run in the closing seconds leaving him P1 with a 1m30.295s.

While it was an encouraging sign for the Kiwi, particularly after a difficult Friday, he admitted that he set the time on good rubber.

“I don’t know,” he said. W”e’re on the best tyres, so I d0n’t know. I didn’t spin off then…”

Yesterday’s pace-setter Chaz Mostert was second fastest, ahead of Volvo’s Scott McLaughlin and fellow New Zealander Andre Heimgartner.

Nick Percat was the best of the Holdens in P5, ahead of Lee Holdsworth, whose session ended in a cloud of oil smoke after a late problem.

James Moffat led the way for Nissan in P7, while Ash Walsh was the best of the Erebus entries in P10, a spot ahead of team-mate Will Davison.

Jack Perkins again took the wheel of the #22 Holden Racing Team Commodore, going 16th fastest. The second generation racer will drive the car for the remainder of the weekend, with James Courtney sidelined with injury.
