MORGAN SCORES U.S. VIPER'S FIRST AUSSIE POLE,
JOHN BOWE'S MUSTANG No. 1 ON GTP GRID AT EASTERN CREEK

SYDNEY driver Geoff Morgan gave the American Chrysler Viper its first pole position in Australian motor racing when he topped an intense qualifying session at Eastern Creek International Raceway today for round five of the Megamantis.com Australian Nations Cup Championship.

Lamborghini's Paul Stokell led for most of the half-hour session and with a lap time of 1 minute 36.26 seconds appeared to have clinched the pole and the championship point that goes with it - until Morgan answered with an unbeatable 1:35.93 from the thundering eight-litre Viper.

Morgan was delighted with his achievement, but predicted tomorrow's three Nations Cup races would be hard-fought, despite the Viper's dominance today.

"I'll be making the best of being first on the grid but racing is different from qualifying and I'm sure Stokell, Mark Noske in the Ferrari and Jim Richards in the Porsche are not going to make it easy. I think our three races are going to be crackers," Morgan said.

John Bowe trumped the Century Batteries GT Performance field by more than a second in his Ford Mustang to take pole position for the first of tomorrow's two round-five races at the PROCAR Champ Series meeting.

Scott Loadsman, in a Commodore SS, was fastest in qualifying for the Century Batteries GT Production series, 0.5 sec. ahead of V8 Touring class leader Brian Carr, in a Falcon.

Hundreds of enthusiasts taking part in a trackside ute muster tomorrow are expected to see a close battle in the Poolrite V8 BRute Muster, after backmarker Garry Treloar (Holden) drew pole position, fastest qualifier Gary MacDonald (Commodore) drew third and series leader Damien White (Falcon) last spot.
