KELLY BROTHERS SHOW PROMISE IN TOWNSVILLE PRACTICE
Jack Daniel's Racing team-mates Todd and Rick Kelly have shown promise in a solid start to the Sucrogen Townsville 400 after practice in far north Queensland today.
The brothers were near the top of the timesheets for much of today's running, but did not find the improvement of others when running on new tyres in the dying moments of final practice.
While the Jack Daniel's Racing pairing are seeking improvement in terms of qualifying and race pace overnight, today's solid start is a shot of confidence ahead of the pair of 200 kilometre races this weekend.
After occupying second and seventh place on the timesheets in Practice 3, the pair ended the day 13th and 21st on overall times after Practice 4.
Jason Richards was fastest overall in practice today ahead of Jamie Whincup and Garth Tander.
JACK DANIEL'S RACING QUOTEBOARD
TODD KELLY - #7 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore:
"We tried a few things right at the end of practice with our Jack Daniel's Commodore but they proved to be changes in the wrong direction," said Todd Kelly.
"We also got some battle scars today when we had a bit of a misunderstanding out there with Shane van Gisbergen at the last corner.
"The car was very good early on today so we then made some changes to try a few things. When we put a set of greens on to try a fast lap that is probably the worst the car was for the day in terms of set-up.
"If we go back to how we had the car earlier in the day and we can get a clean lap in qualifying I'm pretty confident that we have a good car."
RICK KELLY - #15 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore:
"It was quite a misleading practice session today," said Rick Kelly.
"We were looking pretty reasonable for most of the session but obviously a lot of the quicker guys were on old tyres when we were at the front.
"So when they put new tyres on they were actually a fair bit quicker than we expected.
"At this track with two long races your race speed than your qualifying speed and last year the race speed deteriorated quite quickly as the tyres dropped off.
"So we did a longer run there today to see how our tyre wear is and focused on that a lot.
"We need to improve our qualifying pace there but we didn't get a qualifying lap on green tyres towards the end.
"We're not exactly sure where we sit but I think we would be inside the top 15. I think we've got room for improvement and a little bit of work to do to be in the top five, which is where we want to be.
"It was a good day in terms of settling back into this track 12 months on, but we've still got some work to do to get up the top."
