IRWIN RACING COMES TO GRIPS WITH NEW TOWNSVILLE TRACK

Alex Davison has stretched he legs of the IRWIN Racing Ford during practice for the all-new Dunlop Townsville 400.

Running on a new track with old tyres during the afternoon's two 50-minute practice sessions, Davison and his team worked through a detailed process of improving the IRWIN Falcon. In the end he set the 17th quickest time, but importantly the team did not put on new tyres at the end of practice, while others turned a number of laps on the fresher rubber.

With the new track already proving to be hard on tyres, the decision to keep the new tyres in the garage today is sure to prove beneficial in tomorrow's qualifying and into the opening 200-kilometre race.

WHAT ALEX DAVISON HAD TO SAY:

"It wasn't an outstanding final place on the time sheets. But as is the case in practice when you use old tyres it really comes down to what you have to work with. In saying that, we made some big steps forward from the start to the end of the session. I actually thought I had got the best out of the tyres, but we made some changes and went quicker, which is clearly encouraging. I think we are on the right track. We'll give it a bit of a tune-up for qualifying and I think we could be in with a shot. We never considered running our new tyres today. We have to be mindful of not only tomorrow, but also Sunday so tyre management is critical, and we will stick to our plan and make sure we give ourselves the best opportunity on both days."

WHAT IRWIN RACING ENGINEER WES McDOUGALL HAD TO SAY:

"A good learning day for us all. Got our heads around the new circuit. Although our final position didn't show it, we got through a lot of changes that did improve the car. Tyres are the most crucial thing here. The left rear gets a hammering, so that is something that we need to be mindful of as we get into the races. We decided to use only older tyres today and keep our good stock for qualifying and the races."
