IRWIN Racing's Lee Holdsworth has had a contrasting day, with the final result being a 26th place finish in the opening race of the Sydney Motorsport Park 360.
Holdsworth was fastest in the opening practice session of the day and things appeared to be heading in a positive direction.
After another practice session, Holdsworth could only manage 25th in qualifying.
Starting on soft race tires he quickly gained ground over the opening segment of the race - climbing to the mid teens before switching to the harder rubber.
Under attack from those on the softer tires, Holdsworth came off second best in a battle with Michael Patrizi and he was forced to pit for flat-spotted tires after contact and a spin.
The IRWIN Racing Ford will be back on the track tomorrow for practice, qualifying and the second race of the weekend
What IRWIN Racing’s Lee Holdsworth had to say:
"I thought we were going OK after practice but we had not tried any green (new) tires on," said Holdsworth.
"In qualifying we put the new tires on and we just can't seem to get it to hook-up on a new set of soft tires.
"We started 25th and began to make our way up, but pretty early on I knew we didn't have something that we could fight with. The tires did go off pretty quick and once we changed to the harder tyres we were battling with the back runners and we ended up in strife. Patrizi tried to pass me, but punted me off instead.
"The thing I'm most disappointed with is the speed, and not what happened at the end there. We need to get on top of it and hopefully start moving forward."
