Jason Bright came home second in today's final race of the V8 Supercar Championship after another stoic drive, this time against returned champion Jamie Whincup.
The Team BOC driver, who qualified second, ran a different strategy to his peers, pitting only twice. He conserved fuel in the mid-sector of the race, surprising everyone with his intention to run to the end when he failed to pit under safety car with 17 laps to go.
He held off Shane Van Gisbergen for several laps before succumbing, letting Whincup through in the process. Bright did not waste time taking second place back, however, passing the Red Bull Racing Australia driver, and 2013 champion, on the next corner and hanging on until the chequered flag.
V8 Supercars will be back on track for the official test at Sydney Motorsport Park on Saturday February 15th.
Jason Bright"We pitted when everyone else did initially and were conserving fuel, thinking everyone was going to the end, but it became apparent around halfway that we were the only ones. It was all a bit disappointing to see that last safety car come out because I think we would have held onto the lead if it had run to the end.
"We were a bit lucky with Jamie. I didn't know he was there; I was too busy tangling with Shane. The first I knew of it was when he was in my door. I knew my only chance was to get him into the next corner and I was hoping the championship was playing on his mind and he'd make it easy.
"This year I thought we were a shot at the championship to start out with but street circuits really hurt us. I really wanted to come here and prove that we've got on top of our street track problems and I think our pace has shown that. That was the ingredient that we needed this year."
