JACK DANIEL'S RACING COMMEMORATES RICK KELLY'S CENTURY
Todd P10 and Rick P14 in practice at Symmons Plains
Jack Daniel's Racing has commemorated Rick Kelly's record-breaking 100th event with a surprise for the 26-year-old at Symmons Plains Raceway in Launceston, Tasmania today.
Kelly, who becomes the youngest driver to start 100 V8 Supercar/Australian Touring Car Championship events this weekend in Tasmania, was surprised with a gift from his team, presented by brother and team-mate Todd Kelly, during a media call in pit lane this morning.
Rick Kelly was presented with a large pictorial canvas this morning, capturing his successful career to date, including images of his debut event at Queensland Raceway in 2001, his two Bathurst wins in 2003 and 2004 and his 2006 championship victory.
Also included in the canvas were several podiums appearances that the brothers have shared together at events such as the Nitro SuperGP and Clipsal 500, as well as the debut event for the new Kelly Racing operation earlier this year, Rick Kelly's first appearance in Jack Daniel's Racing colours.
Rick Kelly will also run a special bonnet in Tasmania this weekend, with 'Rick's Century' adorning the bonnet of the #15 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore this weekend at Symmons Plains.
In practice today both Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodores faired well, with Todd Kelly 10th fastest and Rick Kelly finishing the day in 14th position on the timesheets after the two major segments of practice held today.
Todd Kelly, who won the Saturday race at the 2.4-kilometre circuit last year, was also able to participate in the first segment of practice, allocated for rookie drivers, endurance event co-drivers and those outside the top 15 in the championship standings.
Greg Murphy was fastest in practice today ahead of Lee Holdsworth and Mark Winterbottom.
Elimination-format qualifying, the top 10 shootout and the opening race of the weekend will be held tomorrow, while a further qualifying session and longer distance race will be staged on Sunday.
JACK DANIEL'S RACING QUOTEBOARD
Rick Kelly - #15 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore:
"We didn't expect much from today because the tyres we had for practice were not that great," said Rick Kelly.
"We're pretty happy to be P14 with that in mind.
"This track is one where we expect to get good results so we'll be pushing hard tomorrow.
"It will be all about strategy in the race tomorrow so it's going to be crucial to get it right."
Todd Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore:
"My Jack Daniel's Commodore probably felt the best it's been all year," said Todd Kelly.
"The changes and improvements we have made between events have really been a big help.
"I'm really looking forward to seeing what the car is like on new tyres tomorrow, because today it felt like we were headed in the right direction."
