V8 SUPERCAR - SHELL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES QUALIFYING - SYMMONS PLAINS - ROUND NINE
Home-town hero John Bowe will start tomorrow¹s ninth round of the V8 Supercar Shell Championship Series at Symmons Plains in 12th position after battling handling problems at the Tasmanian circuit.
Bowe was only 17th fastest in the second practice session today, but improved to 12th place in the single qualifying session.
The Cat Falcon¹s attack was blunted by understeer in the early sessions, forcing the team to make dramatic changes prior to qualifying.
"We made a lot of suspension changes to the car, but the understeer problem hasn¹t completely gone away and it doesn¹t feel nice over the bumps," Bowe said.
"We made up a 10th of a second and in this quality competition - a 10th is a long way.
"But unless you are close to the mark when you first hit the track on Saturday, it is very difficult to claw your way back.
"We also tried some changes after the morning warm-up which didn¹t make a huge difference, but we will look to make further improvements before tomorrow¹s three races."
Ford driver Paul Radisich took pole position ahead of Holden driver, Greg Murphy - both New Zealand-born drivers.
Bowe is keen to pull out a strong performance in front of the home fans tomorrow, but knows repeating his Calder Park podium finish will be very tough.
"The further you start back in the pack, the bigger the chance of getting into trouble," Bowe said.
"Hopefully, after the Calder dramas, the pack will be better behaved and we be able to complete the day with a straight racecar.
"Bumpy circuits have not been kind to us this year, but we are working frantically to try to improve the car.
"The Cat team will certainly be out there giving it our best shot because the support from the local fans has been overwhelming this weekend."
