Matthew Brabham re-enacts Sir Jacks 1959 World Championship Win
Matthew Brabham pushed a 1959 Cooper Climax Formula One car across the finish line here today at the Surfers Paradise SuperGP to re-enact his Grand Fathers 1st World Championship at Sebring 50 years ago.
Matthew was wearing the very helmet that Sir Jack used in 1959 and one of his old original race suits as he drove the Cooper around the track in front of the cheering race fans before stopping the car just short of the finish line, with Sir Jack waiting with the chequered flag he pushed the car over the line.
50 years ago Sir Jack Brabham was crowned World Champion after leading the United States Grand Prix at Sebring only to run out of fuel and coasted to a stop before the finish line. Because he had to finish the race to get enough points to win the championship Sir Jack pushed the car across the line to finish in 4th place and became the first Australian to be crowned world champion.
"It was an unbelievable feeling today to not only drive a Formula One car from 1959 but to be able to get out and push the car across the line with Grandpa waiting there with a chequered flag. To be able to do this together was just awesome and It is going to be a memory that will last with me for a very long time".
Sir Jack Brabham:
"I was very proud and happy to be honoured in this way, but to have my grandson Matthew drive the car and push it across the line made even more special for me. I know Matthew is going to continue the Brabham name in motor racing for a long time to come and I wish him all the luck in the world because he definitely has the talent to succeed".
Matthew Brabham has been selected for the 2010 CAMS Rising Star program and will be competing in the Australian National Formula Ford Championship next year, driving for the CAMS Rising Star / Minda Motorsports Team.
