CLEWS STEALS THE ROUND IN AUSSIE RACING CARS AT SUPER GP
Kyle Clews was a surprise winner of Round 6 of the Aussie Racing Cars Super Series at the Gold Coast's Super GP this weekend after a final race melee put David Lawrence into the wall and out of contention.
Race 4 today turned out to be the one to watch after David Besnard threw a cat amongst the pigeons to force his way to the front of the field and provide a race-long battle with Lawrence, Clews and Gowans.
On many occasions the lead bunch went through the corners two wide in what was the most spectacular racing of the event.
It was the last lap that provided most of the action with Lawrence falling victim at the second chicane where he ended up in the wall in the shuffle, he went on to finish 12th.
On the back straight for the final time Clews and Besnard were side by side and Gowans picked up a good slipstream from Clews.
It was good enough to slingshot past and into the lead heading into the final chicane.
"I just belted it through that last set of chicanes," Gowans said.
"And I was able to take the win from there.
"I struggled a bit for speed this weekend and I thought if I could get a third place for the round it would be like a win for me.
"Instead I got second for the round and a race win, it was totally unexpected."
It was a needed win for Clews who was sitting in fourth on the series points table prior to this event.
Race 3 yesterday saw Lawrence win his third race for the weekend with Clews second and Maurice Masini third, which eventually gave him third for the round.
