Ellery/Brabham Positive Despite Missing Top 15 In QLD

Super Cheap Auto Racing driver Steve Ellery will rely on his race strategy to cut through the field at the VIP Petfoods 500 tomorrow in Queensland, after being bumped from the top 15 during today's qualifying session.

It's a shocking result for Ellery and co-driver Brabham who, after notching the second fastest practice time yesterday morning, were under a second from pole position but still finished in 17th position.

"It just shows you how close it is. It'll be so tough from 17th but the guys that won it last year did it from further back on the grid, so it's not impossible.

"It was quite a shock not to nail it today. We had the pace in practice and if there was any track we thought we'd qualify up the front it was here. I've got to say, I am disappointed but you've got to bounce back and just get on with the business," Ellery explained.

Being bumped from the shootout was a major blow for Ellery who has traditionally improved his qualifying position during the shootout. In Canberra he moved into 4th during the shootout but unfortunately hasn't had much chance to prove his prowess as a one-lap specialist this year.

"Geoff and I will have to work our butts off tomorrow to make up the ground, but when tyre conservation plays a big part in how the race pans out, it's the only consolation you can take from not making the cut.

"We've got a couple of strategies up our sleeve and we'll see how the race is planning out to see which one we bring out of the bag.

"Despite our setback this morning, I know we have the race pace and we'll be banking on that and our strategy to pull us out of trouble." <pre> QUALIFYING RESULTS (before shootout) 1.Perkins/IngallHolden1:09.93 2.Skaife/BrightHolden1:10.01 3.Ambrose/CrickFord1:10.25 4.Johnson/RadisichFord1:10.43 5.Bowe/WillsFord1:10.54 6.Murphy/KellyHolden1:10.60 7.Mezera/LonghurstHolden1:10.60 8.Morris/NealHolden1:10.63 9.Besnard/WhiteFord1:10.64 10.Seton/RichardsFord1:10.66 17.Ellery/BrabhamFord1:10.98
