More speed needed from Pirtek Falcon.
The Stone Brothers Racing team will be working overnight to find the needed speed to challenge the front-runners in tomorrow's top 15 shootout for the Bob Jane T-Marts at Bathurst's Mt Panorama.
Marcos Ambrose was 11th fastest in his Pirtek Falcon in qualifying today, but is still off the pace set by provisional pole sitter John Bowe.
The qualifying session was topped by two-time winner John Bowe with a time of 2:08.3873 from championship leader Mark Skaife (2:08.4047) and Jason Bright (2:09.0170).
Ambrose, the leading Ford driver in the V8 Supercar Championship Series, did seven qualifying laps set a quickest time of 2:09.8100.
"We are not fast enough simply as that," said Ambrose. "We will work on it tonight and hopefully be closer tomorrow.
"We had a good car early, but we have not improved enough to chase the front-runners.
"Bowe did a 8.3 (lap of 2:08.3) and I did a 9.8 (2:09.8) and took pole here last year with a 2:09.7.
"1.4 seconds is a lot and we did to find the speed."
Weel did four timed laps in the morning practice session, but got help in traffic when he bolted on a new set of tyres.
"I think the car is pretty good," said Weel. "We still need to find a little speed, but I think our race package will be strong.
"It would be great if Marcos and put us a little further towards the front in the shootout and then we can get on with the job on Sunday."
The other SBR Falcon, the Caltex Havoline Ford of Wayne Gardner and David Besnard, has been withdrawn from the race after major accident in morning practice.
Gardner walked away from the crash at the end of Mountain Straight, but suffered a mild concussion.
The final 15 places for Sunday's grid will be decided in tomorrow's top 15 shootout, which will be held at10.05am.
