First Qualifying - Round Four Australian Sports Sedan Championship

Bailey Blitzes In Queensland

Defending champion Kerry Baily continues his fight back to retain his crown by setting a sizzling pace in the first of two qualifying sessions at Queensland Raceway. In the championship, which is run in conjunction with selected rounds of the Shell V8 Supercars series, the Tasmanian lapped in a best time of 1m07.2145 and was 3.5 seconds under the lap record.

His awesome Nissan 300ZX with a six-litre Chev engine under the bonnet was over two seconds faster than his nearest rival series leader Tony Ricciardello (WA) in a Chev-powered Alfa. Third quickest was young Daniel Jameson (NSW) who is driving his father's (Barry) pretty Jaguar XKR for the first time in a National Sports Sedan event. Both Ricciardello and Jameson were also under the lap record.

Fourth fastest and the quickest of the Queenslanders was Phil Crompton in a Ford Falcon while his chief local rival, Pontiac driver Jeff Barnes appears to be out for the weekend after suffering valve damage to his engine.

Mark Stinson was next fastest and is expected to improve as too Dean Randle. Meanwhile Tony Wilson continues to impress in his less exotic Holden Commodore ahead of Ivan Mikac in a Mazda and Mick Monterosso whose thunderous Escort/Chev returns to the series after missing the last round.
