Alexander Downer in for the ride of his life in Darwin

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer will this Friday experience life at a little under 300km per hour when he joins Caltex Racing's Russell Ingall for a 'hot lap' in a V8 Supercar at the Hidden Valley Circuit in Darwin.

Minister Downer is the third successive representative of Prime Minister John Howard and Federal Minister to attend a V8 Supercar Championship Series meeting.

He follows Defence Minister Senator Robert Hill who represented the Prime Minister at the historic debut of V8 Supercars in China a fortnight ago and Federal Education Minister Brendan Nelson who attended the Eastern Creek round in Sydney. Minister Nelson took a hot lap of Eastern Creek with Ingall's team-mate, Pirtek Racing's Marcos Ambrose.

Minister Downer is a great supporter of the V8 Supercar Championship Series and a regular at the flagship Clipsal 500 in his home town of Adelaide at the start of each year. He will also attend a Carbine Club luncheon at the Hidden Valley track track on Thursday.
