Slade leaves it late to top first Winton practice
Walkinshaw Racing’s Tim Slade topped the V8 Supercars practice session for the Winton SuperSprint.
Slade was a late improver in the one-hour session, charging to second place on his second last lap, before grabbing top spot with a 1m23.893s lap just 11 seconds before the chequered flag came out.
That lap was good enough to drop Triple Eight’s Whincup down to second, the margin between he and Slade just 0.003s.
Erebus Motorsport’s Ash Walsh was third fastest, having set his best time – just 0.068s slower than Slade’s benchmark – on a set of used soft tyres.
“We ran the softs at the end of the session just to get a feel of the balance of the car,” he said.
“It’s pretty nice, but it’s only session one. We’ll keep chipping away at it.”
Prodrive Racing Australia’s Chaz Mostert was fourth fastest, ahead of surprise Perth winner Will Davison and Todd Kelly, who led the early part of the session for Nissan.
Shane van Gisbergen was seventh, Fabian Coulthard eighth, and David Reynolds ninth, while Scott McLaughlin was best of the Volvo’s down in 10th.
