Winterbottom produces fantastic race win at The Creek.
Stone Brothers Racing's Mark Winterbottom produced one of the drivers of his career to win the second leg of round two of the Konica V8 Supercar Championship Series in his Milligans Food Group Falcon at Eastern Creek in Sydney today.
Winterbottom was third in the opening 12-lap race in the morning and then came from 20th on the grip in the afternoon's reverse grid event to claim what is believed to be the closest win in the history of the Konica series.
Amazingly, Winterbottom was seventh after the opening lap, which was interrupted by an incident at turn two which brought out a safety car.
He had got through to fourth by lap seven, but then slipped off the track in a rare lapse of concentration in his Falcon, which also carries major sponsorship from Bosch, Caltex Havoline and Pirtek.
Winterbottom dropped back to eighth, but never gave up on fighting his way back to the front.
He followed Mark Porter on to the straight for the final time, but managed to drag up along side him and then extract every ounce of horsepower out of his SBR Ford to claim his win by just 0.0115 of second.
Jose Fernandez finished third ahead of Luke Youlden and Craig Bastian.
Winterbottom will now start from pole in tomorrow's third and final 22-lap race.
"I certainly made hard work of it, but we got there," said Winterbottom.
"I finally got a good start and thought I was looking OK when I was in seventh after the first lap.
"I started to take it too easy and locked a wheel as I was passing (Todd) Wanless and ended up out in the dirt. I thought I had thrown it away.
"It was great to do this today with Bruce (Paton) from Milligans here and all our other sponsors."
