Whincup second in productive Sandown practice.
Vodafone's Jamie Whincup has put the excitement of the preceding weeks team announcements behind him and made his intentions for this weekends Norton 360 Sandown Challenge clear, finishing today's V8 Supercar practice sessions with the second fastest time.
The reigning V8 Supercar Champion was quickest in the second practice session, then went on to set his fastest lap time on the last lap of the third session, finishing a mere one hundredth of a second off Mark Winterbottom's provisional pole time. "It was a huge relief to finally get in the car after such a big couple of weeks," Whincup admitted.
"The car was fantastic straight out of the box, but I felt I was far from my best today."
"I was happy with where we eventually finished as I struggled to put a good consistent lap together towards the end. I am sure a good sleep tonight will put me right for tomorrow," he added.
Sandown Raceway's most successful driver, Craig Lowndes also enjoyed a constructive day, lapping consistently in the top five throughout both sessions before finishing the day sixth on the timesheets.
"That was one of the most productive practice sessions we have had this year," Lowndes explained.
"The car was fantastic and responded well to all our changes. It is easy to drive and predictable so I am really looking forward to getting out there on a green set of tyres tomorrow."
"When you look at our times and the tyres we were running they were definitely comparable," he added.
Tomorrow's Norton 360 Sandown Challenge action will see the V8 Supercars on track for qualifying at 11.00am with Race 13 of V8 Supercar Championship Series to get underway at 4.05pm.
