Whincup withstands qualifying pressure
TeamVodafone will start the Just Car Insurance Sandown 500 tomorrow from fifth grid spot after Jamie Whincup impressively guided Car #888 through today's intense qualifying sessions and top ten shootout.
Earlier in the day teammate, Craig Lowndes ran the TeamVodafone V8 Supercar with full race fuel and tried various race setups to give the team direction not only for a race setup but also for qualifying.
Whincup continued to improve the car throughout his practice session and broke the practice record with a time of 1.10.5974.
In what was the most nail biting qualifying sector all year, TeamVodafone elected to run the young driver on the used race tyres that broke the practice record and only conducted six laps at the start of the session.
Confident that his time would be enough to make the next sector the Team opted to sit Whincup out for the rest of the session and progressed with .05 of a second to spare. Richard Lyons, at the helm of Car #88 also progressed to the next sector with ease after he held out a number of seasoned competitors to record the tenth fastest time.
In the second qualifying sector Whincup recorded the third quickest time to cement his place in the shootout while Lyons missed out by a mere tenth of a second and had to settle for 14th.
With all four drivers putting in solid performances today the decision on who will start tomorrow 161-lap race will be left until after the morning warm-up.
What they had to say.......
"I am very happy with the result we are still in a good position for the start of tomorrow's race."
"The reason we are not on pole is because I slightly under drove the car as there is a very fine line between being on pole and ending up in the sand trap."
"I couldn't be more confident going into 500km's tomorrow. We are not on pole but we are on track for what we want to achieve."
"That was a great result Jamie did a good job throughout qualifying today."
"In my session this morning I drove the car on race trim and it was well balanced and had very good car speed."
"We will have to wait for the weather to present itself tomorrow before we finalise our setup but I am confident we will have a very good race car."
"The car performance was good and the Team did a great job today, it was just unfortunate that this Championship is so close and we missed out on a top ten shootout spot by one tenth of a second."
"Allan and I are a lot more in tune this year and we have a great race car so bring on tomorrow."
"I was pretty happy with our performance today. The car setup was much better and we really made some progress."
"I am really looking forward to the race we have a strong package and I think the fact that Richard and I drove here together last year will put us in good stead for a top ten result."
