OAMPS ENDURANCE INSURANCE CLASSIC - SANDOWN INTERNATIONAL MOTOR RACEWAY
MONDAY 13th JULY 1998
OAMPS TO BACK SANDOWN GTP ENDURO
GT Production cars will return to Sandown International Motor Raceway for the first time since 1993 with OAMPS Insurance Brokers sponsoring a 1-hour Enduro prior to the V8 Supercar Tickford 500 on Sunday, September 13.
The two-driver compulsory driver change event will feature the five classes from the Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship as well as a new sports car class catering for vehicles such as the Toyota MR2 and Mazda MX5.
And in what is believed to be a unique world first, every competitor entered in the event will receive comprehensive on-track insurance from OAMPS for their GTP machine for raceday.
The OAMPS group is an innovative provider of insurance and related services to Corporations, Associations, Industry Groups and individuals throughout Australia and internationally.
The only Insurance Broker listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, OAMPS has been operating for over 20 years and has over $100 Million in assets.
OAMPS is a specialist insurer and focuses on the delivery of professional and personalised services to a 50,000 strong client base.
OAMPS is no stranger to race insurance protection. Rob Porter, OAMPS' Chief Executive personally arranged the cost effective cover for the first three Adelaide Formula 1 Grand Prix races back in 1985.
"There is no doubt about the power and efficiency of motorsport as a marketing medium and we believe the OAMPS Endurance Insurance Classic will provide us with outstanding benefits," Mr Rob Porter said.
"PROCAR Australia and its sponsorship manager, Craig Denyer have provided us with a unique opportunity to enhance the marketing of our services and we are excited about the fact that every car contesting the race will be comprehensively insured by our company.
"We specialise in high risk insurance, so covering a racing car is no different to other key areas of our business such as fuel tankers.
"With the race immediately preceding the Tickford 500, OAMPS believe the event also provides an ideal link to our regular core business. We already insure several V8 Supercar teams as well as companies such as Shell and Mobil."
The event will act as an ideal preview to the 3 Hour Showroom Showdown at Mount Panorama, Bathurst in November and will receive live television coverage through Network Ten.
All the action from the Tickford 500 will be screened on Ten from 11am to 5pm.
Sandown International Motor Raceway Promoter Jon Davison believes the addition of the GTP category to the Sunday race program will greatly benefit both parties.
"Having the GTP action on immediately prior to the Tickford 500 further enhances what is already a fantastic day's entertainment," Davison said.
"The GTP category is extremely professionally staged and managed and features a diverse range of manufacturers and importers.
"It also provides Australia's ever increasing depth of young drivers with an outstanding opportunity to race before a large crowd and be part of a live national telecast."
Leading contenders for the event should include the GTP championship leading Dodge Viper GTS of Garry Waldon, John Bowe's Ferarri F355 Challenge and the Porsche 911 RSCS machines of Domenic Beninca and former Sandown 6-Hour winner, Peter Fitzgerald.
"We are thrilled to add the OAMPS Endurance Insurance Classic to our calendar and believe it will provide outstanding benefits and opportunities for our competitors," PROCAR Chief Executive, Bill West said.
"Live television coverage before the Tickford 500 will provide a superb showcase for our category and I believe the one-hour format also will result in a fascinating and entertaining battle right through all the classes."
