LAMBORGHINI driver Steven Johnson set his sights on winning his second endurance race in four weeks with a cracking pace in official practice today for the Clarion Sandown 500 in Melbourne.

Johnson¹s V12 Lamborghini Diablo thundered around the 3.1 km Sandown International Motor Raceway in 1 minute 17.27 seconds to put the 26-year-old Queenslander narrowly ahead of Ferrari rival Mark Noske.

Johnson, who won the V8 Supercar Queensland 500 last month, will line up tomorrow as favorite with teammate Paul Stokell for qualifying and the Budweiser Top Gun Challenge for the fastest 10 drivers.

Fellow V8 Supercar driver Paul Morris turned his hand to Ferrari driving, finishing fourth behind teammate Craig Baird.

Among the class competitors, Cameron McConville topped the Poolrite High Performance class with a time of 1:22.49 in the Holden Commodore GTS he will share in the race with Peter Floyd.

Tomorrow¹s one-race sixth round of the Megamantis.com Australian Nations Cup Championship will see the first all-Chrysler Viper front row, after Geoff Morgan beat D¹arcy Russell by 0.01 seconds in qualifying today.

Newcomers upset the familiar order in practice for the Poolrite V8 BRute Muster. Michael Donaher in a Falcon topped the session ahead of regulars Gary MacDonald and Rod Wilson, both in Commodores.

James Brock, son of Peter Brock, came fourth in a Commodore in his first outing in the new ute racing series.
