Richards qualifies 13th for Sandown 500

Kiwi Jason Richards has qualified 13th for tomorrow's Betta Electrical Sandown 500 in Melbourne.

The Dodo Racing driver narrowly missed a spot in the Top 10 Shootout, though has secured a handy starting position for the car he'll share with Jamie Whincup in tomorrow's 500-kilometre endurance classic.

With weather conditions uncertain, all 34 cars ran in the one qualifying session and this, coupled with changeable weather, resulted in a nervous session as drivers switched from wet to dry tyres as the circuit dried out.

"We went out on slicks at the start of qualifying but then it started raining so I came straight back in," said Richards.

"It was dry on one half of the track and wet on the other.

"I got held up several times on hot laps and there was one in particular that was really good.

"It really was a constant battle out there.

"But 13th in OK for an endurance race. The car's quite good and we're headed in the right direction."

Richards, of course, came within a lap and a half of winning the 2003 Sandown event, and finished ninth in the race last year.

In the team's second Dodo Commodore both Fabian Coulthard and Tony D'Alberto turned laps after they had their Friday time disallowed due to an incorrect final drive ratio being fitted.

It was the former who set the qualifying time, good enough to put them in 26th on the grid.

Tomorrow's race starts at 1pm and will be telecast live on Network Ten from midday.
