Friday practice fires up Sandown campaign for Dodo Racing

A two-hour practice session at Sandown International Motor Raceway today has kicked off the ninth round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series, giving Dodo Racing drivers a chance to play themselves in for this weekend's 500-kilometre classic.

Paired together in the #3 Commodore, Jason Richards and Jamie Whincup were 22nd fastest in the practice session as they worked through setup work.

Whincup then stepped back aboard in the half-hour session solely devoted to the co-driver in each car and clocked the 10th fastest time for the session.

"We're working through things and fine-tuning and working through our checklists," said Whincup.

"Today isn't all about being at the front, it's about working on the car and ourselves to aim at being there on Sunday after 161 laps."

The team's second car, campaigned by Carrera Cup leader Fabian Coulthard and Tony D'Alberto, was 32nd fastest in the two-hour session as both became acquainted with their endurance mount.

Kiwi Coulthard did the driving in the second session, setting an impressive 13th-quickest time before leaping out of the Dodo Commodore to take part in his next Carrera Cup session.

His time in the second session placed the car 24th in the 34-car field based on combined times from the two sessions.

"I'm pretty happy with our day," said D'Alberto.

"We didn't bother to run on new tyres in the first session, so that dropped us back down the order. I got in plenty of laps, which was good to start to get a feel for the car and how it responds."

The team will return tomorrow for qualifying and the Top 10 Shootout prior to the 500-kilometre event on Sunday afternoon.
