V8 Supercars could be about to adopt the Sandown 500 as an official ‘Retro Round’ from this season onwards.
While there have been a number of one-off retro liveries from different teams over the last few years, Motorsport.com understands that V8 Supercars is moving to make the opening endurance race of the season an official history-inspired event.
Teams will be encouraged to run throwback liveries inspired by the 1960s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, with the vintage theme to even perhaps extend beyond the garages and into the paddock and grandstands.
The move is similar to one made by NASCAR last year, when the American series encouraged teams to run ‘throwback liveries’ at Darlington to celebrate the Southern 500 moving back to its traditional Labor Day weekend date.
The V8 Supercars version, however, would likely be an ongoing theme rather than a one-off.
The concept is also popular in Australian football codes, with both the Australian Football League and the National Rugby League staging Heritage Rounds each season.
